Alishan is famous for all sorts of mountain produce, notably tea see Drink and wasabi, as well as carvings and handicrafts made from red cypress. Souvenir shops also sell tasty cookies and pastries flavored with ashitaba ææ¥è, a medicinal herb reputed to give long life. The name is Japanese for "tomorrow leaf", as according to legend if you pluck a leaf early in the morning, a new one will replace it by the next day.
